The Dos and Don’ts of Choosing Your Next Audition Attire
By now, you’ve probably memorized your script, set your alarm for the big day, and mentally prepared yourself to act your heart out in front of casting directors. If you’re thinking that your outfit is the least of your worries, then think again. With auditions, appearances do matter, so it is important that you walk into the hall wearing that professional look in order to be taken seriously.
Here are a few tips to consider when preparing your audition attire.
Tips for Choosing Your Next Audition Attire
Don’t Go Overboard
When it comes to planning your audition attire, there are no rules. You are free to dress up in a way that complements your personality or the character you are auditioning for. However, you need to remember that there is a fine line between looking original and being over the top. So try to leave the flamboyant outfits at home. Instead, find something that represents who you are as an actor and what you can bring to the world of storytelling.
Do Stay Casual
While it is important to dress professionally, you don’t need to look like you’re heading to a corporate interview. A pair of straight-cut denim jeans is good enough. For women, it is important to dress discreetly as auditions are not the place to wear skimpy clothing. Guys, leave the suit and tie at home, you’re auditioning to be an actor, not a salesman.
Don’t Sacrifice Comfort for Style
If you are not comfortable in high heels, then don’t wear them. If you think your shirt is too tight, then don’t hesitate to change to another one. Casting directors can smell discomfort from a distance, so there’s no sense squeezing into outfits just to “look the part.”
Do Come as the Best Version of Yourself
As an actor, you should be able to understand what body parts need to be accentuated and what needs to be masked out. This is important if you want to look good and build up your confidence during your audition. Remember, you don’t need to worry about being the most good-looking person in the audition room. At the end of the day, it’s all about showcasing your talent in the most confident way possible.
Don’t Forget the Hair!
There’s a reason why hair is being dubbed as the crowning glory, it is literally the first thing people notice when you enter a room. You need to make a choice as to how you want to style your hair when planning your audition outfit. Do note that auditions aren’t exactly the place for bed hair or facial hair, for that matter, unless, of course, the instructions say so. Take all the time you need to get yourself ready, but make sure you get everything taken care of before heading out the door.
The most important part of planning your audition outfit is that your overall look makes you feel confident. You can give a better performance if you stop fussing about what you wear. So make it a personal mantra to look good and feel good to eliminate those dreaded audition nerves. The Dos and Don'ts of Choosing Your Next Audition Attire by Holly
